Weaning and Milk Amounts

Since we started our weaning adventure, a lot of people have asked how much milk I am giving our babies alongside food. If you’ve seen how we have weaned our babies from our Baby-Led Weaning and Weaning Twins posts, you’ll know that I have spent the last few months offering a variety of tastes and textures over time. At first they hardly ate anything, but over the weeks it has increased and consequently their milk intake has decreased.

Here is an overview of (roughly) how much our babies drank alongside food during the weaning stage:

6 months old:

Our babies hardly ate anything at this age, it was more like tasting different foods (with help from us to get the food to their mouths). We started on real food from the start, rather than puree (please see our weaning posts for more details).

6am: Breakfast, followed by 6oz milk

9am: 6oz milk

12pm: Lunch, followed by 6oz milk

3pm: 6oz milk

5pm: Dinner

6pm: 6oz milk

10.30pm: 6oz milk

2am: 6oz milk

Our babies started to eat a little more food. They still struggled to get the food accurately to their mouths so we continued to help them.

8 months old:

This was the turning point for us as our babies FINALLY stopped needing night feeds! They were becoming more accurate with how much food they could get into their mouths too so were eating more.

6am: Breakfast

7am: 6oz milk

10am: 4-5oz milk

12pm: Lunch

1pm: 6oz milk

4pm: 6oz milk

5pm: Dinner

6.30pm: 6oz milk

9 months old:

The babies started moving from using a fist to pick up their food to experimenting with a pincer grip during this month. This meant they were beginning to grasp smaller objects, such as cubes of banana, dry pieces of cereal or chopped up grapes. We also changed the amount of milk at the beginning and the end of the day so that we didn’t need to give them milk as often as the previous months. Their mid-morning milk was also replaced with a food snack.

10 months old:

Within this month we saw a huge difference in their ability to get food into their mouths. They have been eating more and more and it’s fantastic to see!

6.15am: Breakfast

7.30am: 7oz milk

10am: Snack

12pm: Lunch

2pm: 4-5oz milk

5pm: Dinner

6.30pm: 7oz milk

As you can see it has been a slow change over the last few months, but it’s so wonderful to see the progress of the babies eating more food throughout this time. I look forward to how the next couple of months will go.
